Resources: 'Behaviour Is Communication'
Marie Gentles' (Head, Hawkswood Primary Pru): essential research, book, service and behaviour policy
Politicians have been setting out manifestos and making promises. Will they keep them? Who knows. Am I keeping mine? Yes… well, sort of! More below.
Thank you to everyone who’s listened to the latest episode of the We Are In Beta podcast. If you haven’t yet or you’re a new subscriber, catch up on ‘Behaviour Is Communication’ from Hawkswood Primary Pru here.
Being able to hear teachers’, a parent’s and a student’s perspective in this story is an absolute privilege. The teacher’s is as heartbreaking as the student’s is inspiring.
What’s in store today?
Just two sections today, not the usual three. One: what you’ve been saying about the latest episode. Two: the essential resources that have come up via Marie Gentles and Katie L’Aimable’s story at the bottom of the post.
The community news section has been growing so I ran it as it’s own post this week.

The best ‘In Beta’ bits
As promised last week, and with a big thank you to Marie and Katie, here are the resources they mentioned in their episode and some others, which have influenced their journeys significantly (and their thoughts about them):
Research:
“One of my favourite pieces of research is the work of Carol Dweck around growth mindset. Amazing!”
Book:
“The book that's had the biggest impact is actually a book recommended to me when I did Nurture Group training as it really helped me help others to see and understand vulnerable pupils from a different angle and understand attachment. It's called 'Inside I'm Hurting' by Louise Bomber. “
Service Marie couldn’t do without:
“The one external service I couldn't do without would probably be speech and language. I think it's hugely undervalued and often used as a 'tick box' exercise when needed for evidence to make a referral for an EHCP for example.
However, behaviour as communication is the underpinning thing that professionals working with these pupils need to understand, and then how to support children to verbalise using words and not via their behaviour.
At Hawkswood we just use just the borough’s services, so buy into North East London NHS Foundation Trust speech and language service.”
Behaviour Policy:

A taster of Marie and Katie’s training programme:
Last week I promised a taster of their popular programme. I haven’t managed to collect this yet - sorry! Keep an eye on this post online - I’ll add it as soon as I can. In the meantime, you can follow them @macigbehaviour
