Resources - 'HeForShe'
Chris Hildrew - Headteacher, Churchill Academy & Sixth Form: essential research, book, service, blogs, speech and pledges
Hello listeners and subscribers!
So this is the last week of term. Congratulations! But I’m not going to wish you a great break… yet.
Because it’s not the last of the We Are In Beta Podcast for 2019.
Next weekend we’re doing something a bit different. We’re releasing two episodes at the same time. A double bill. They were the first episodes we started researching and recording back in March but the final episodes of this series to be released.
Tune in this Sunday to find out why.
We still have some slots left for Series 3 - out next year. If you’d like to take part or nominate a story, let me know.
Keep an eye on your inbox for information about the kinds of stories we’re looking for and how to submit.
Right, enough house keeping. What’s in store today?

The best ‘In Beta’ bits
As promised last week, and with a big thank you to Chris, here are the resources that have come up via his story and some others, which have influenced his journey significantly (and his thoughts about them):
His favourite piece of research
“Yeager and Cohen's 2014 study into the power of positive regard - this study demonstrated that students were more likely to engage with feedback if it came with a message that the teacher believed in their ability to do better:
‘I’m giving you these comments because I have very high expectations and I know that you can reach them.’”
“It illustrates the power of the Pygmalion Effect: if we believe in our students, and communicate that belief, they are more likely to live up to that belief. I blogged about it here”
The book that’s had the biggest impact on his career
“‘Mindset’, by Carol Dweck - because it opened up the idea that self-concept was a powerful motivator.”
“The hard part has been working out how to shift students' embedded self-concept, which isn't as simple as Mindset would have you believe!”
A discount code for the ‘10% Braver’ book he features in
An internal Churchill Academy & Sixth Form document…
“…that is designed around effective meeting chairing, where it’s the chair’s responsibility to ensure women’s idea’s are heard. I did some really interesting research about how often men will take credit for women’s ideas, women are more likely to be interrupted in meetings… It’s about making the chair of each meeting aware that it’s their responsibility to ensure that all participants’ ideas are heard.”
The service he couldn’t do without as a head
“The site/service I recommend is the EEF – their recent set of guidance reports has been very useful indeed.”
His blog and his book
“My blog is here [where you can read exerts from his book] and I also have my Headteacher's Blog here.”
Chris’ book ‘Becoming A Growth Mindset School’ is available here.
Emma Watson’s Speech at the UN…
…where she said “If not me then who? If now then when?”
“She spoke directly to me. To men. This is your issue too. You need to do this. You need to step up. You need to do something.”
“And here are the pledges you can take. And I was like “Where do I sign?”
Where do you sign?

🗑️ Lots of people sign up for this newsletter. But because lots of companies like to blanket email and spam their customers, email servers like Google and Microsoft aggressively filter email that’s sent to big subscriber bases like this one.
🙏️️️ This means lots of We Are In Beta subscribers aren’t receiving it. I know this because people message me to ask why I have stopped. As you can see, I haven’t. If you found this edition in your spam, mark it as ‘not spam’, drag it to your inbox and send me a reply introducing yourself. It would be lovely to meet you. And it will teach Google and Microsoft that this is nutritious not nefarious! Thanks.
