🎧 Intrinsic motivation.
One of the fundamental lessons we learn as teachers and leaders is how to motivate our students. Historically, this has come down to the Skinnerian model of behaviourism, which is essentially positive and negative reinforcement. Extrinsic motivation.
John Camp, the Lead of the Compass Partnership, was taught this too. But he began to see things differently when his own headteacher challenged him to think about intrinsic motivation.
As Trust Leader, John has since developed a ‘no rewards culture’ across his partnership. But Katie Cutajar, who is the Co-headteacher of Alderwood Primary wasn’t sold on it at first.
In this episode, we talk about the negative effects of relying on rewards, how John and Katie have changed their minds, what it looks like in their schools and the benefits they’ve seen.
📝 Black Woman’s Load.
You may have heard of the ‘mother’s load’. The extra bits that women pick up along the way: the packed lunches, thinking about what kit or clothes the children need, planning the shopping etc.
But there is another load less often talked about. The ‘black woman’s load’. The extra baggage that you have to carry around on top of everything else due solely to your race.
Shonagh Reid, Assistant Headteacher, discusses some of the evidence, outlines five tropes and how they add to the ‘black woman’s load’ and what can be done about it.
If you’re working towards building a more equitable, diverse and inclusive school culture…
