The best ‘In Beta’ bits
As promised last week, and with a big thank you to Manny, here are the resources that have come up via his story and some others, which have influenced his journey significantly (and his thoughts about them):
Favourite research…
“Anything from the EEF. They have done so much to simplify academic research so that it can be digested and applied by schools and teachers. They ask thought-provoking questions and continually gets the profession to reflect on what will really make a difference to young people's learning. Excellent stuff.”
The book...
“…that has had the greatest impact on me as a Head is Bill Walsh's ‘The Score Takes Care of Itself’. I'm not really into American Football. So I was initially sceptical about what I could take from a book written by one of football's greatest ever coaches. Boy was I wrong! A terrific insight into how to create a winning and successful culture in an organisation.”
The one service..
“…I could not live without is Twitter. A simple an easy way to find out about news, views and CPD. A great resource when used carefully!”
Manny’s Headteacher's Notes…
…which have been critical to the way he has obsessed about culture to build connection and links with the local community, can be found on the Tythrington School website here.
Two presentations…
…that give you an insight into his leadership and Tytherington’s story. You’ll learn about some of the strategies that we couldn’t include in the episode for e.g. ‘inventing traditions’ like taking whole school photos and obsessing about culture:
His TED X Talk…
…where he explains why “we believe that young people are so much more than the numbers and letters at the end of their name”.
Watch ‘How to change a community by asking one simple question’ here.
(Found on Manny’s office wall, which is also covered in some of the most incredible student artwork)
